Research and Education

Since its creation, our three biological stations: Los Amigos, Manu and Wayqecha have hosted numerous projects focused on biodiversity studies, climate change, and research applied to rural development. We are also recognized for offering field courses for university students on topics including conservation biology, biodiversity field methods, tropical botany, wildlife monitoring, among others.

Courses for fellows at the Manu station

Our Manu Biological Station, with support from the International Conservation Fund of Canada (ICFC), provides fellows of the Conservation Biology Internship Program with specialized courses in biodiversity and research. These courses include demanding activities such as canopy climbing, first aid, the use of technology in bioacoustics, camera traps, drone operation, and training in botany, entomology, scientific writing, and programming.

These courses are also open to the general public, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the rainforest to study wildlife sounds, explore forest canopies, respond to remote emergencies, and much more. Experienced instructors guide participants, fostering a strong connection with nature while providing tools for professional development.

Genomics course in the jungle

With the goal of monitoring wildlife and environment health in one of the most threatened regions, Madre de Dios, since 2021 our partner Field Projects International (FPI) has offered the Genomics course in the jungle. This course focuses on genetic techniques to describe biodiversity, providing hands-on training in molecular species identification, metagenomic, and environmental DNA analysis.

The course demonstrates the potential of genetic and genomic methods conducted directly where samples are collected, as well as their effectiveness for biodiversity health detection and monitoring in a laboratory located in the heart of the Amazon.

Conservation courses at the Wayqecha Biological Station

Wayqecha hosts a wide range of educational programs and training courses for universities and institutions focused on conservation. Prestigious programs such as the School of Field Studies (SFS), Wildlands Studies, and several universities in the United States, Canada, and Peru offer immersive experiences in tropical ecology.

These courses provide the opportunity to experience the dramatic transition from the Andes to the Amazon while learning about the impacts of climate change on flora and fauna. With a dedicated classroom and laboratory, students participate in classes, apply research techniques, and develop their own projects.
