Projects to Combat Threats
We work closely with regional and local governments, as well as communities, to combat threats such as illegal logging, illegal gold mining, and invasive agriculture in the region. With every step we take, we strengthen the conditions for conservation and effective law enforcement.
CAMBIO PROJECT
The CAMBIO Project operated for five years (2016-2020) in collaboration with various public entities and justice operators in Peru, including the National Forestry and Wildlife Service, the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State, the Indigenous Federation of Madre de Dios, among others. In collaboration with Norad and USAID's Prevent Project, the initiative trained hundreds of stakeholders in the use of drones to gather evidence of alleged forestry and wildlife crimes.
In addition, the project supported the creation of the SERFOR Satellite Monitoring Unit and strengthened prosecutorial investigations by providing advanced technical resources to ensure the presentation of stronger evidence in the fight against environmental crimes in the Peruvian Amazon. Thanks to the CAMBIO Project, progress was made in regulating the National Forestry and Wildlife Control and Surveillance System.
PREVENT PROJECT
USAID's PREVENIR Project seeks to prevent and combat environmental crimes in the Peruvian Amazon by strengthening the institutional and technological capacity of relevant stakeholders and improving the formalization processes of illegal gold mining. In collaboration with government institutions, civil society, and the private sector, the project implements measures to raise awareness, inform citizens, and strengthen law enforcement. The project focuses on the regions of Loreto, Ucayali, and Madre de Dios, and works to strengthen institutions responsible for the conservation of fauna and flora, as well as justice institutions.
